How to obtain an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) document?
In order to transport dangerous goods or materials with the potential to pose a hazard, an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) is required. Accordingly, one of the main question marks for those who want to ship goods abroad is how to obtain an MSDS document.
The Material Safety Data Sheet in Türkiye is regulated by the “Regulation on Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Substances and Mixtures,” which entered into force on December 13, 2014. According to the conditions determined by the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), a certified Material Safety Data Sheet must be prepared by a “Safety Data Sheet Preparer” who is accredited by TÜRKAK (Turkish Accreditation Agency) in accordance with international standards. When obtaining an MSDS, experts who meet these standards must be consulted.
After 31/12/2020, MSDS documents have been prepared by chemical assessment experts certified under the KKDİK Regulation (Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals).
The Material Safety Data Sheet must be prepared by the manufacturer or supplier of the chemical substance and provided to users. This requirement is stated in Article 5 of the Regulation on Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Substances and Mixtures. In addition, the MSDS document must be approved by TSE (Turkish Standards Institute) as mentioned above, and the person preparing it must be certified by TÜRKAK (Turkish Accreditation Agency).
For every chemical substance purchased, the buyer has the right to receive a Material Safety Data Sheet prepared in Turkish from the manufacturer or supplier. For this reason, when preparing an MSDS, attention should be paid not only to providing information for experts, but also to ensuring that the information is accurate, clear, and understandable for everyone.
When shipping goods abroad by air cargo or during import procedures, the MSDS must be up to date and issued within a maximum of one year, while for express services this period is two years. In addition, when transportation is carried out via international shipping methods such as air cargo, an English version of the MSDS is also required. This is because regulations regarding dangerous goods and their transportation are revised every two years. Furthermore, dangerous goods cannot be shipped via courier services; however, products such as those in the cosmetics category that require an MSDS can be transported. If the material is classified as a high-risk dangerous good and will be shipped by air, transportation must be carried out strictly as air cargo.
